The Krakatoa Eruption. This 26th day of August 1883

The Krakatoa Eruption which is part of the ring of fire, affected the entire world for years.

Here are the basic facts and findings I have found, that you might find interesting about this disastrous event in history.

Although this eruption started 100 days beforehand, in May 1883, at around 1.06pm on the 26th of August the Krakatoa eruption started to show its true force. All three volcanic peaks erupted simultaneously sending hot rock and ash 17 miles into the air.

70% of the island of Krakatoa and its surrounding archipelago were destroyed as it collapsed into a caldera.

Between 5:30 -10.02am on the 27th there were 4 huge explosions and the third explosion is believed to have been the loudest sound ever to have been recorded naturally. Here is a link that has a snippet of that actual sound from 1883 (crazy huh!)

The explosion was estimated to be as loud as 200 megatons of TNT

or a massive 13,000 times bigger than the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima.

The eruption was one of the deadliest and most destructive volcanic events in recorded history. The explosion was heard 3,110 kilometres (1,930 mi) away in Perth, Western Australia, and Rodrigues near Mauritius, 4,800 kilometres (3,000 mi) away.[3] The sound was reportedly heard in 50 different locations around the world.

The pressure wave was estimated to have travelled around the world 3.5 times and the sound wave travelled around the world 7 times over 5 days.

Ash and Sulphur dioxide that was put into the air from the eruption was to disrupt weather patterns, ocean and air temperatures for more than 5 years. The 1883 Krakatoa eruption darkened the sky worldwide for years afterwards and produced spectacular sunsets throughout the world for many months.

The eruption caused a volcanic winter.

Tsunamis cause by the eruption were by far the greatest killer, 36,000 people are known to have died from them.
