- Ross is an experienced Emergency Management Professional with over 30 years’ experience in the Emergency Services and Emergency Management fields. He has a thorough understanding of New Zealand’s natural hazard riskscape and the importance of preparing and encouraging our communities, businesses and organisations, and the public, to understand the risk of this nation’s susceptibility to the impacts of natural and non-natural hazards, and to plan accordingly to minimise the impacts of such events when they do arise.
- He has previously been part of a 3-year project as part of the East Coast LAB (Life at the Boundary) project team which developed the Hikurangi Response Planning Toolbox – released in 2020 – in response to the threat posed by the Hikurangi Subduction Zone which lies off the east coast of the North Island. This project was funded by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Resilience Fund, and was developed to guide planning based on a credible scenario 8.9 magnitude mega-thrust subduction zone earthquake that could be generated by this natural hazard.
- Ross understands the importance of relationships and collaboration and over 30 years has forged strong and collaborative links and contacts across the country within the Emergency Services, Central & Local Government, Emergency Management partner agencies, Civil Defence, and the Science Community. He is thoroughly conversant with relevant Legislation and Acts in regard to Emergency Management and has thorough knowledge of Civil Defence & Emergency Management structures and systems both within management and as a practitioner.
- Ross is passionate about New Zealand and recognises the importance of building resilience within all sectors of the country in recognition of the hazards we face living in this magnificent but hazardous part of the world and this continues to drive him in his chosen field.
